Paleo Brownies

Paleo Brownies

If dark-chocolate is what you're after, this is the recipe for you. I love that this is a flourless recipe made without any processed sugar. It's made in one pot, not bowl, and is divine! This is yet another home-run recipe that everyone loves. Give this recipe a try!

Ingredients:
1cup pure maple syrup
3/4cup natural cocoa powder
1cup almond butter
2tsp vanilla extract
1/2tsp baking powder
1/2tsp salt
1 egg
1/4cup dark chocolate chips

Directions:
Heat syrup on low heat on the stove. Stir in cocoa powder over low heat until smooth. Cocoa can burn fast so keep your eye on it.

Remove from heat and stir in remaining ingredients until thoroughly mixed.
Pour into an 8x8 baking pan greased with olive oil or coconut oil. Bake at 325F for 40-50 minutes.

Use a toothpick to make sure it's cooked through. Cool before cutting/serving.

Eat and Enjoy!

  5. I tend to do better with agave rather than maple syrup...I know it's not as rich but the lower GI sits better with my body. Has anyone tried that substitute? Thanks!

    1. I haven't had anyone comment yet on using agave but hopefully someone will post back if they have.

  6. These look amazing! Has anyone tried using coconut oil in place of the almond butter?

    1. Hi Shawna,

Coconut oil will not be a substitute in this recipe. Unfortunately, you won't get the brownie you're looking for. The almond butter is what holds it all together and the coconut oil will just ruin the batch. If you're allergic to nuts, try using sun butter or if you can eat peanut butter, use that instead.

      Thanks,

  7. Where does it get the cake like texture from? Just wondering if these have the right texture...

    1. Jo,

You can add an egg or two if you like a cake like texture. If you like it a little more fudgy, leave out the eggs.

      Thanks,

    1. You can enter the recipe into http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/recipe_analysis.php and it will calculate it for you. Just make sure you look at the serving size. You can either calculate the whole recipe or enter x# of brownies and figure out the per brownie nutritional info.

    2. 2482 calories for the pan, not counting the chocolate chips (don't have any on hand). I've got a batch in baking using half real maple syrup and half Maple Grove Butter Flavor Low calorie syrup (splenda sweetened) as an experiment but the majority of the calories in the recipe come from the almond butter, not the sweetener.

    3. They turned out perfect with the half real/half sugar-free syrup so I have another batch in baking with all sugar free syrup and egg white substitute instead of a whole egg. Should cut the calories to 1722 for the pan (again without the chocolate chips).

    4. Def. a lot of calories but I'm okay with indulging every once in a while. Thanks for getting that information up in case others were wondering as well!

  9. Are these brownies super sweet? They sound delicious but I'm not sure about the sweetness and amount of sugar in maple syrup, since the glycemic index isn't that much different than sugar...

    1. You could half the amount of maple syrup with no problem. I recently used 1/2cup cocoa powder instead of 3/4cup and they worked great.

      Hope this helps!

  10. Do you have a substitution for the maple syrup? With using so much real maple syrup and almond butter, these are some pretty dang expensive brownies!

    1. These are expensive.. With shopping at Sams, it costs about $9.00 a batch BUT they are worth it. I promise!

You could try honey (expensive) or agave (which I've never used but others have tried and said it works) or maybe coconut crystals and an egg?

      I hope this helps some!

  11. I substituted the maple syrup with honey and almond butter with peanut butter because those were what was currently in my panty. Not very good :-( I will stick to the almond butter for sure!

  12. Ya,
I don't think these would be good with honey at all. I typically hate using honey when a recipe calls for syrup. Peanut Butter is good - I've made it with PB before though :)

  13. I was skeptical and unsure of how these would be brownies with no flour, but HOLY COW they are so good!!! Expensive, yes, but no refined sugars and no flours make them my new favorite. So good!!

  15. Very good! Just made these and there was enough moisture in the recipe that it did fine here at altitude. I live in Denver.

  18. I made these last night and used Carob powder instead of Cocoa powder. Was that an OK substitue? The texture was perfect but there was something bitter/roasty about the taste.
